Condoms
Condoms help prevent pregnancy and reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). They can be used for vaginal, anal or oral sex, and on sex toys.
If you’re aged 16 and over, you can order free condoms or visit The What? Centre in Dudley during service hours.
How to use a condom
Use a new condom for each sex act.
Place condom on tip of penis with rolled rim facing away from body.
Pinch top of condom and unroll all the way down the base of penis.
After ejaculation, hold rim of condom and withdraw penis from vagina while still erect.
Throw away used condom properly. Do not flush down the toilet.
What to do if a condom breaks
We strongly advise that you have an STI test. If you think you may have been at risk of HIV, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) can prevent the virus from developing if taken within 72 hours (most effective if taken within 24 hours).
Tips
Use a new condom for sex act.
Follow the instructions on the condom packet to put it on correctly.
Check the use by date has not expired – an expired condom may not be effective.
Check the packet for a European CE mark or UKCA mark – this means it’s been tested to high safety standards.
Do not use more than one condom – this can make one or both condoms split.
Do not use oil-based lubricant with latex condoms – use water-based or silicone-based lubricant instead.
